Sanders’ book comes in the wake of other works by such noted scholars and critics as Neil Postman of New York University and Walter Ong of St. Louis University, substantiating the McLuhan thesis about the effects of broadcast media.
These scholars underline McLuhan’s notion, for example, that literacy—especially when amplified by print—is not simply a different way of absorbing information but a different way of relating to the world, to others, and to oneself. If electronic technology is indeed effacing centuries-old habits of literacy, then there is no better source for understanding the meaning of this effacement than the work of McLuhan.
